About us

In the mid 1980’s young entrepreneur Vasantha Jayasuriya, developed a passion towards British Architecture through his visits to Britain in the mid 1980’s. He worked on creating an English Country type manor by using old English architectural techniques in a location known as ‘Little England (Nuwara Eliya)’. He purchased a century old bungalow in the heart of Nuwara Eliya previously known to have been owned by pioneering Governor of Ceylon, Sir Edward Barnes who built Barnes Hall, now known as the Grand Hotel.

Mr.Jayasuriya through his research found it most attractive to use Tudor architecture in the exterior and packed up the interior using authentic old English typed furniture, British artefacts and antiques such as the 135 year old Billiards table, which he had purchased over a period of years, to give those weary travellers the look and feel of Old England. He named this unique masterpiece Hotel Glendower. The Name derived from an untraceable occupant from the past who seemed to have named the bungalow after the Walsh legend Prince Owen Glendower, the last to claim the title of an independent prince of Wales, more correctly described as Owain ab Gruffydd, lord of Glyndyvrdwy in Merioneth.

Hotel Glendower has been in existence for the last two decades and has developed from a charm English country motel to one of the most sort after boutique hotels in Nuwara Eliya. They have been continuously awarded various titles for their picturesque mini botanical garden and have hosted significant and sort after figures over the years. Explore Glendower and you wont be disappointed. The facilities and services you get supersedes all your expectations. The friendly attitudes of staff derives from its owners warm hospitability and attitude to say its visitors are god.
